Diet is crucial for women during menstruation. So, what fruits should women avoid eating during their period?
Foods you shouldn't eat during your period
Experts point out that it's not just ice that should be avoided during menstruation. Foods with cooling properties, such as ice cream, winter melon, eggplant, loofah, cucumber, crab, snails, kelp, bamboo shoots, oranges, pears, pomelos, and watermelons, as well as sour and astringent foods like sour plums and unripe sour fruits, and spicy and hot foods like fried foods, chili peppers, black pepper, and mustard, should also be avoided to prevent poor blood circulation.
Foods to eat more of during menstruation
During menstruation, it is recommended to eat more scallions, black fungus, peanuts, walnuts, dates, longan, and rose petals. Experts suggest that if you accidentally eat cold food or ice during your period, you can drink more ginger boiled with brown sugar to balance blood circulation and promote smooth blood flow.
Traditional Chinese medicine discourages women from eating ice during menstruation, while Western medicine considers it harmless. Experts point out that menstrual blood is the shedding of the uterine lining, expelled through uterine contractions. When ice is consumed, the temperature of the stomach and intestines drops, affecting uterine contractions and making it harder for menstrual blood to be expelled, thus forming blood clots. To expel these clots, the uterus has to contract more forcefully, which is why eating ice may cause menstrual cramps.
However, experts say that Western medicine does not reject any food; even postpartum women can eat ice. Although eating ice may cause uterine contractions and menstrual cramps, these blood clots can be expelled through the body's own mechanisms, so women don't need to worry too much. However, if excessive menstrual cramps occur due to eating ice, a gynecologist should be consulted to check for other possible underlying conditions.
